Why You Should Care about Your Wellness

From Cozy Cluelessness to Confident Empowerment

I was doing some work on my website recently, and browsed past a sentence I had in the intro section of my blog page. And quickly went back to it for an extra minute. It was a seemingly mundane sentence but a specific phrase (or is it a clause?) hooked me so bad, you’d wonder why, considering I’m the same person who wrote it. The sentence was right there after I described being diagnosed with PCOS in 2009, and it read:

This is one of the reasons why I created this outlet. I want more women to push against the comfort of ignorance, learn more about their bodies, and understand the impact of hormones on our overall well being. We deserve to thrive despite all the complexities and frustration that comes with PCOS and related hormonal issues.

And what stood out to me was this part - “PUSH AGAINST THE COMFORT OF IGNORANCE”

How do you push against comfort? Comfort is….. Comfortable. Ignorance is bliss! So this isn’t a natural push to do something that you’d normally have if you were in an uncomfortable or difficult situation where you feel the natural urgency to do something! So while this sentence seems pretty mundane, I just couldn’t stop thinking about that term. Pushing against comfort. And to what end? What makes it worth it to go out of my way to push against a pretty cushy current vibe anyway?

Well while comfort may feel safe, familiar, and warm, it’s a different story when it comes to your physical and mental health. In this regard, staying in the comfort zone of ignorance often means overlooking the whispers your body sends you until they become shouts. And trust me this is one situation I know too well!

For women, especially, this can be a complicated dynamic. We’re nurturers, busy taking care of others, managing homes, careers, and relationships. In the process, it’s easy to ignore that lingering fatigue, brush off the irregular cycles, or dismiss the weight of stress as just part of life. But what if stepping out of that comfort zone—acknowledging the unknown and seeking answers—could lead to the vibrant, thriving life you deserve?

Embrace the Learning Curve

The truth is, pushing through the comfort of ignorance into a place of learning is not easy. It requires vulnerability, curiosity, and a willingness to confront the unfamiliar. But here’s the beauty of it: the journey to understanding your health is one of the most empowering things you can do for yourself.

This means:

  • Asking questions. Why do I feel this way? What are my body and mind trying to tell me? Advocating for yourself when you feel dismissed or not heard is a great motivator to make you keep checking in with yourself. Better still, find a professional like a naturopathic doctor that can work with you, validate your concerns and support you in this journey of inquiry, as opposed to being on the defensive.

  • Exploring resources. From trusted health professionals to holistic wellness guides, there’s a wealth of knowledge waiting to be discovered. There are so many communities like our Wellness hub where you can reach out to the myriad resources at your fingertips.

  • Trying new things. Whether it’s a new supplement, a mindful movement practice, or introducing natural solutions like essential oils, each step is a building block toward your wellness foundation. A great way to push past comfort is to try something new. And oh the stories I could tell you!
